SONG OF THE WEEK: Carly Connor - Last Love

We keep on on our track of songs of the week with Last Love, the single from Carly Connor’s new EP (available as a free download on her website, so if you don’t get it…well honestly we don’t get it! ).  

Carly Connor has probably been one of the best female singers to come out of the very productive rock n’ roll cradle that Scotland is. Being at the same time Janis Joplin’s spiritual (grand-) daughter, a fashion icon, Kyle Falconer’s girlfriend and a talented/soulful songwriter doesn’t seem to be a burden for the girl who’s only 21 years old. She earned her stripes in venues where she performed in front of crowds who were more into lager and pogo than her sixties influences.

Last Love is a soul/pop ballad with some hints of electro in which Carly Connor demonstrates her vocal abilities: gravelly “à la” KT Tunstall but also straightforward and clear – a thing that all major radios should love. In this song, we find a songwriter who knows where she comes from and where she wants to go, picking in her musical references (Shangri-Las and co) while blowing a heavy dose of modernity into the tunes.

A very good singer who will be performing in London in the next few weeks. Not to be missed. But we guess it’s a given fact.

Cette semaine, nous continuons sur notre lancée avec Last Love, le dernier single de Carly Connor, extrait de son nouvel EP (téléchargeable gratuitement sur son site, donc aucune excuse pour passer à côté).

Carly Connor est probablement l’une des chanteuses les plus talentueuses à sortir du foisonnant berceau rock n’ roll qu’est l’Ecosse. A la fois fille spirituelle de Janis Joplin, icône mode, petite amie du chanteur de The View et songwriter soul, Carly Connor a surtout gagné ses galons à force de concerts où du haut de son mètre cinquante-cinq, elle a gagné le respect de publics plutôt portés sur la bière et le pogo que sur les influences blues sixties.

Last Love est une ballade pop/soul aux intonations parfois électro dans laquelle Carly Connor peut montrer toute son étendue vocale : rocailleuse façon KT Tunstall mais aussi posée et extrêmement radiophonique. On retrouve une compositrice qui sait d’où elle vient et où elle va, piochant dans ses références (Shangri-Las et conseurs) tout en instillant sa dose de modernité.

Un bon cru qui sera sur les scènes londoniennes ces semaines prochaines. A ne pas rater.
